'Scrap ContactPoint database', say LibDems

ContactPoint should be scrapped and the savings used to provide additional support for front-line social workers, under proposals by the Liberal Democrats to be debated at their party conference in Bournemouth this week.

Annette Brooke, the party's children and families spokesperson, said that the money saved by getting rid of the controversial database of children in England could be used to provide social workers with more administrative and technical support, which would free them up to spend more time with families.

Ms Brooks said, 'Social workers should have the opportunity to complete secondments with other professionals working in child protection, such as the police and schools. This would ensure better communication and understanding between all child protection professionals.

'The Government is pinning a lot of hope on its children's database, but this huge, intrusive project will not encourage professionals to talk to one another. It should be scrapped, with the money saved used to give social workers extra support, allowing them to spend more time with families and less time completing paperwork.'
