Seeing off SARS

28 May 2003

Thank you for printing the news story 'Ofsted advises staff leaving SARS areas' (8 May). I was one of 20 people to have returned recently from a two-week early years study tour to China. I was extremely grateful to my GP practice that said to go to work if I had no symptoms, my line manager at Essex SENaPs who accepted the advice, and my work colleagues who gave me a hug and said, 'We can see you have had a great time.'

Some of my tour companions were not so lucky and suffered unnecessary unkindness from people ill-informed. I am grateful, too, to our guides from Master Travel who took great care of us as parts of China closed around us.

China is a fascinating country with a lot to offer. I certainly will return.
