Sporty babies in a class of their own

Scotland's first Baby Gym classes devised especially for those from ten to 18 months bounced into action this month at Dundee's Douglas Sports Centre. Coach Maureen Bowser said, 'In other parts of the country, these babies would have to go into the under-threes class. It is super to be able to work just with this age group.'

Coach Maureen Bowser said, 'In other parts of the country, these babies would have to go into the under-threes class. It is super to be able to work just with this age group.'

The classes will initially run for 12 weeks. Their two main aims are to introduce physical activity at an early age and to encourage parental bonding and interaction with the babies. Parents can adapt the activities to suit their own child's development, whether they are crawling, standing up or walking.

Mrs Bowser shows parents how to encourage the growth of skills such as ball release. She said, 'As the weeks go on, I will be giving them further developments and suggesting things parents can do with their babies at home. There will be sequential learning outcomes.'
