Street wise

A trip to the local shops gives children the chance to become aware of print, number and information technology in the everyday environment When planning a topic about shopping, it is important to plan for the children to visit shops, and their local high street. When planning a topic about shopping, it is important to plan for the children to visit shops, and their local high street. Ideally, small groups of four children and two adults should explore the local environment together.

Each trip should have a different purpose - some children can buy cooking ingredients from the supermarket, some can buy vegetables from the market, some can explore clothes and shoes in local stores while others can visit a florist.

When preparing, write a shopping list with the children whenever possible, and record the trip using a digital camera.

As children share their experiences of the visits, start to create an overview of the local area, including the main shopping street, by introducing maps.
