Strike threat from Ofsted inspectors

Ofsted inspectors in early years and social care may go on strike after pay talks with England's inspectorate broke down last week.

A three-year pay offer below inflation has angered over 1,000inspectors, who are represented by Unison and the Public and CommercialServices (PCS) union.

They will be balloted for industrial action this week, with strikespossible in May.

Both unions are disputing the offer, while school inspectors, belongingto another public service union, the FDA, accepted.

Neil March, PCS negotiations officer for Ofsted, said, 'This three-yearoffer is totally unacceptable and will result in a significant number ofhardworking staff receiving nothing in the first two years, with othersreceiving less than 2 per cent.

'Below-inflation pay and cutting pay in real terms will do nothing forthe morale of staff and yet again Ofsted staff working in highlystressful call centre environments have been overlooked.'
