Students speak out on discipline

* Childcare students in Northern Ireland have been asked to give their opinions about child discipline as part of the ongoing consultation on physical punishment in the Province. Students from the North-West Institute in Derry were asked to submit a 1,500-word essay on the consultation launched last month by finance and personnel minister Mark Durkan. He said, 'For many parents, effective discipline is seen as everything that teaches a child how to relate to the world and those in it, including rewarding good behaviour as well as punishing bad behaviour. So as part of their course work, these students are being asked to write an essay telling us what they think child discipline is about and to outline effective strategies as well as looking at the options for reforming the law.'
