Summer projects awarded 4.8m

Summer school projects across the UK have been awarded 4.8m by the New Opportunities Fund. The award means that summer projects in England will receive 4,603,677 and Scottish ones 98,724, while the North Eastern Education and Library Board in Northern Ireland has been allocated 50,400. The money will benefit pupils at more than 600 schools across the UK.

Aberdeen City Council has been given all of the money awarded in Scotland. It will be used on activities and workshops including dance, sculpture, visual arts and costume making for up to 500 children, a third of them aged three to five.

Jacqueline McKay, principal officer for education at Aberdeen City Council, said, 'We have run schemes like these before and they have always been popular. With the funding we can now make this accessible for more children, especially the younger ones.'
