Support promised as NTO shuts down

Contingency plans have been drawn up to ensure that childcare employers continue to receive basic advice and support on training issues when the Early Years National Training Organisation is disbanded at the end of this month. On 31 March the Early Years NTO is closing down, along with the 72 other NTOs, because the Government wants to replace them with a smaller number of larger, more powerful Sector Skills Councils (SSCs). Not all sectors with NTOs will have SSCs, and some SSCs will cover a number of related sectors.

Five sectors were given trailblazer SSC status last December, but a bid submitted by the Council for Awards in Childcare and Education (CACHE), the parent body of the Early Years NTO, was rejected.

CACHE chief executive Richard Dorrance said it would carry out the Early Years NTO's basic functions, such as running the orientation programme and providing advice, for the time being.
