Support sought for speech and language skills

* A national steering group to support early language development for young children across the UK is to be set up next month by the National Literacy Trust (NLT) to ensure children aged nought to three are supported in their literacy by 'empowered' parents, carers and communities. The NLT is inviting representatives from early years organisations, central and local Government, parenting organisations and the health sector to join. It is working on the premise that children who fail to develop adequate speech and language skills in the first years of life are far more likely to experience reading problems at school.

NLT director Neil McClelland said, 'We shall need a cross-sector partnership to work strategically and imaginatively over a ten-year period. If we sustain such a commitment, the gains are enormous. We can make a genuine difference to early language acquisition and contribute to the life chances of millions of our children.'
