Survey reveals children are starting school without the social and verbal skills needed

Children are starting school unable to dress themselves, use the toilet properly or eat at a table, said Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, ahead of the union's annual conference (News, page 5). A members' survey found 'many children start school without the social and verbal skills to be able to take part in lessons'.
