Synthetic phonics

Inspired by the current official emphasis on the use of synthetic phonics for the teaching of reading, Bretford UK has launched the CardMaster Card Reader by Califone, a leading technology company that specialises in audiovisual equipment for education. The CardMaster is designed for early years, speech and language therapy, special education and parent literacy groups and it enables users to link the visible letters with the sounds they hear as a means to improve reading skills, phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The Card Reader comes with blank cards that can be recorded with sounds associated with written words. Children select a card, listen to the pre-recorded sound and mimic that sound which can then be recorded and played back for comparison. The magnetic cards are also re-recordable, to save costs, and recording can be carried out using either a built-in or external mic. Built from ABS plastic and designed to withstand constant use, the Card Reader also comes with activity packs, blank cards, markers, stickers and an instruction book, and is priced around Pounds 238.
