Table talk

Many children miss out on the ritual of sitting round the table eating and talking due to parents busy work schedules, but it is a civilising and socialising habit worth cultivating.

Always ensure that a member of staff sits down with the children and joins in, even if they just have a cup of coffee, rather than walking round the table.

Get children to pause between their sandwiches and fruit, yoghurt or whatever, by talking to them.

Encourage slightly older children to set the table and clear away and see that everyone plays a part, even if you have to re-do things when they are out of sight.

Sit particularly quiet or boisterous children next to you so that everyone gets a chance to join in.
