Target for reducing child poverty impossible to meet

The target for reducing child poverty by half by 2010 will be almost impossible to meet, Department of Work and Pensions figures reveal, as the number of children living in poverty remains unchanged from last year, at 2.9 million.

Figures released last week in the report Homes Below Average Income showthat Tony Blair's pledge in 1999 to halve child poverty in Britain by2010 is likely to fail. The report considers a family to be poor if theyare living on less than 60 per cent of Britain's average level ofhousehold income. For more information visit www.dwp.gov.uk
