Teachers should learn about IT in their own time, says Clarke

Teachers should be willing to spend weekends and school holidays learning about new technology and educational resources, former education secretary Charles Clarke said this week.

Speaking on Monday at the launch of the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) review of the changing needs of education, Mr Clarke, MP for Norwich South, said that it was vital that teachers and schools are familiar with the latest technology.

He said, 'The key point for me is the capacity of technology to help children and learn and to ensure that they move forward. As methods of learning change, the capacity of the teacher to take advantage of change is exceptionally important. Professional teachers should want to spend their own time updating their skills. It's not the job of the local authority, or their school or the Government to do it for them. If the argument is about finding the time, I would ask what is happening outside of school time, when school is not in session.'
