'When you are thinking of expanding, you have to think through: is this going to support the development of your organisation or weaken it?' says June O'Sullivan, chief executive of the Westminster Children's Society.

'You have to appreciate that it takes time to expand and incorporate, and time is money.'

So, if a potential expansion would undermine rather than enhance your organisation - don't do it.
