Qubix (24.99) from Manhattan Toy

Tested by Blooming Babies Day Nursery, Stanford-le-Hope, Essex This soft play shape sorter features 12 panels, each of which presents its own surprise. There is a variety of sounds, shapes and graphics as well as stuffed fabric shapes. It is also collapsible when not in use.

Manhattan Toy Europe Ltd, The Loft, 204 Durnsford Road, London SW19 8DR (020 8944 3160) Tester's report

'This is a good exploratory toy for a very young child with its squeakers and smooth and shiny panels and our babies enjoyed playing with it. It also seems very durable. However, despite its attractiveness it's actually useless as a shape sorter as all the shapes can be pushed through any hole. We also have some concern about its safety as the small shapes can easily be put into the mouth and the elastic around the toy could be pulled and get twisted around fingers, so play needs to be supervised. A bit expensive, too.'
