Testing times

On behalf of our readers, staff in nurseries, schools and out-of-school clubs around the country have put a range of products through their paces to assess their value in the workplace and to give each item a star marking UNDER-THREES

Mini-Puzzles Cocoon (5.35 per puzzle) from Asco ****

Asco Educational Supplies, 19 Lockwood Way, Leeds LS11 5TH (0113 270 7070)

Tested by Green Top Private Day Nursery, Bradford

There are three puzzles in the range - Butterfly, Bee and Ladybird. Each four-piece puzzle is made from flexible Ordima material and fits into a 19 x 19cm plastic tray. Recommended for two-to three-year-olds.

Tester's report

Even though these puzzles consist of only four pieces, the children had to really think about which way they fitted in. They got frustrated when they didn't get it right, but they persevered. We could see the determination on their faces and they played with them for long periods. We tried them with special needs children and they could be very beneficial for a child with a low attention span. There's plenty of learning potential here. The children did tend to put the pieces in their mouths, leaving teeth marks, and I think they are a bit expensive.
