The Big Picture: Bang the drum

Children and parents at the Charlton Family Centre in London marked Black History Month this October with a day of celebrations in a marquee.

Activities included mask-making and designing and building musical instruments. Local group Global Fusion Music and Arts organised performances and workshops showcasing African dancing, drumming and acrobatics, and parents provided traditional homemade food.

The centre, part of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, organised the event, sponsored by local housing association Charlton Triangle Homes.

Centre co-ordinator Mona Naqvi said, 'It was just one of those things where everything clicked together. It was the first time we've run something like that and it was so well attended.' and we got such positive feedback that we will definitely try and do it again next year. It was very much a community event and children, parents and staff all thoroughly enjoyed it.'
