The farm comes to the nursery

It's never too early to teach children about farming, believes Gill Lawrie, chairman of the Angus Countryside Initiative, a charitable organisation that helps local people understand the rural environment. She put the message into practice when she visited Muirfield Playgroup in Arbroath to tell children about food production. By letting them touch real wheat and oats, Mrs Lawrie was able to relate what was grown on the farm to what the children had for breakfast. To give them an idea of the farming calendar, she explained that the wheat in her hands had been planted when they started playgroup last year. Then she showed them an example of this year's crop and said that by the time the children leave playgroup to start nursery, the plant will have changed from its present green to the familiar tall, golden sheaves.

Playgroup leader Yvonne Abigail continued the theme by giving the children sandwiches for their snack. The following day they all made playdough, using flour and water. 'We kept a handful of wheat so that we could remind the children how the flour was made,' Ms Abigail said.
