The lion and the mouse: Retold by Jean Evans

Once upon a time a small mouse crept over a sleeping lion. She crept over his great big ears, his long, long whiskers and his bushy, hairy mane. Suddenly the lion woke up and, whoosh, caught the little mouse in his sharp claws.

'Let me go! Let me go!' squeaked the little mouse, 'If you are kind to me and let me go, then maybe one day I can be kind to you and help you.'

'Ho,' roared the lion, 'How could you help me? You are only a tiny little mouse!' But the lion let the little mouse go.

Soon some hunters approached and caught the lion in a trap made of ropes.

The lion roared and roared but he could not get out of the trap.
