The new Sure Start Centre in Wakefield West

The new Sure Start Centre in Wakefield West was the venue for an awards night this week to celebrate the work of nearly 70 parents and volunteers who have contributed to its success. The 900,000 centre, which opened in December, provides a 36-place nursery, meeting rooms, community play facilities, a children's den and a multi-sensory room. It also houses mother and baby facilities and Totrobics, a programme of physical activities for parents and young children. Programme manager Ingrid Kalischer, who presented award winners with framed certificates of achievement, said, 'Our centre now means we can improve and extend the services we provide to families and their children in the local community. The high number of awards we are presenting tonight shows how popular the centre has become.'
