The number of births in Northern Ireland has decreased by 12 per cent in the past ten years

The number of births in Northern Ireland has decreased by 12 per cent in the past ten years, with 21,648 births registered in 2003 compared with 24,722 in 1993, according to provisional statistics from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency. In 2003, more than one in three of all registered births occurred outside marriage, compared with just over one in five a decade ago. The number of births to teenage mothers has remained broadly stable at around 1,500 each year.
