The number of children in the UK living in poverty rose by 200,000

The number of children in the UK living in poverty rose by 200,000 last year, according to latest official figures. At the same time the Government has published Working for Children, its response to child poverty tsar Lisa Harker's child poverty report from last November. Work and Pensions secretary John Hutton announced new measures to fight poverty worth 150m, including the New Deal for Families, which will record childcare needs and preferences of all parents applying for benefits.
