The nursery nurses left out of action

I would like to draw readers' attention to the plight of the many nursery nurses who are not employed by their local authority and therefore are ineligible to take part in the industrial action currently taking place across Scotland (News, 3 July). Despite being a member of Unison, I was disgusted to learn that my union has no plans to tackle employers regarding the redefinition of pay and conditions for childcare staff working in the private and voluntary sectors. While I fully support local authority staff in their fight for a more appropriate pay deal, I feel that the conditions in which staff in other childcare and education settings work can be even more demanding and are often very poorly paid.

The daycare centre where I am employed operates as a 'partner centre' for the local authority. This means that nursery nurses are responsible for planning and implementing the pre-school curriculum without the need for help or guidance from a primary teacher. We also provide for the care needs of children aged from nought to five, working closely with parents to provide appropriate care for individual children's needs.
