The Teacher Training Agency wants to recruit 20 per cent more male primary school teachers by September. It announced its target last week during the launch of its Corporate Plan and is part of the agency's drive to increase the number of people entering teacher training. The TTA said more people were applying to become teachers than at any time since 1995 and that applications to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) have risen for the third year running. TTA chief executive Ralph Tabberer said, 'Every teacher training place is crucial and we are determined to improve recruitment year on year.' As part of its recruitment drive prospective trainees will be able to apply online for entry to the 2002 Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Other plans include expanding the 'train-while-you earn'

Graduate Teacher Programme to encourage career changers into the profession.
