Tips on what to tell children about alcohol

* Let the subject arise naturally rather than forcing the issue. * Don't use scare tactics - this might have the opposite effect to the one intended.

* Balance the good and bad points - explain that small quantities make people feel relaxed, but also mention the downside of drinking too much.

* Use examples and language which are relevant - discussing diseased livers, for instance, will not seem relevant to a young child, while being sick or being silly will.

* Don't lecture or preach at older children - young people often switch off when they are being told what to do or not to do.
