Louise England-Brown had always wanted to work with children. After she gained her NNEB in 1990 she took a part-time job in the Sheffield City Polytechnic day nursery and started an A-level course. She felt that at the time, no one recognised the NNEB as a serious qualification and childcare was not generally seen as a long-term career.

But Louise enjoyed the childcare so much that when the nursery offered her a full-time job, she abandoned the A-levels. After the nursery closed for the summer she went to work for Sheffield Social Services' young children's centres, where a quarter of the children had special educational needs and many came from families who were experiencing difficulties.
