Tom Jeffery

The first director general for children and families in England has been named as Tom Jeffery. He will lead the new directorate at the Department for Education and Skills, which was formed after the transfer of responsibilities for policies on children and families to the DfES in June. Mr Jeffery said, 'We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure lasting change for children and families. I look forward to working with colleagues across Government, in children's services and in the voluntary sector to make a reality of the vision set out in the recent Green Paper.'

As director of children's services in the Department of Health between 1998 and 2000, Mr Jeffery led the Quality Protects programme and set up the NHS Plan Children's Taskforce. He has been involved in cross-government projects, including Sure Start and the Social Exclusion Unit on teenage pregnancy and the education of children in care. He will be responsible for advising education secretary Charles Clarke and Margaret Hodge, minister for children, young people and families.
