Tomorrow's childminders today

I have just read Nicola Clark's essay on childcare for the future ('Something to say', 22 October). She talks about family groups, home settings, play, taking children to parks and the zoo, qualified staff, regular training and being inspected by Ofsted. Well, instead of saying childminders will be a thing of the past, she is describing today's childminder. I belong to a network of qualified childminders (NVQ Level 3, Introduction to Childminding Practice, Developing Childminding Practice) who have ongoing training, and are all trained in first aid and have up-to-date certificates. Nannies are probably going to be registered and trained in the future as we all are, but I see childminding as a cost-effective way of having all that Nicola wants - only doing it now.

Unqualified, untrained and cheap childminding is a thing of the past, and we childminders should be recognised now as being equal to nursery nurses.
