High/Scope Ireland runs a variety of courses on early years subjects forthose who wish to use the High/Scope approach with children in theirsetting.

Maternity and Nanny Training (MNT)

- Baby care for nannies: one-day course for nannies, maternity nurses,nursery nurses and new parents. Topics include general care, bedtimeroutines and sleeping, feeding, colic and reflux, interaction withsiblings and minor ailments.

- Childcare approval induction course: two days (12 hours). Courses heldat weekends. Designed for childcarers needing to complete an inductionin order to apply to become an Approved Childcarer.

- Emergency paediatric first aid: course covers managing an incident,first-aid kits, care of unconscious casualties, choking, resuscitation,bleeding and burns. Directed at treating young babies and children up toseven years.

- The maternity nanny practitioner: two-and-a-half days of formalteaching, plus pre-reading and post-course assessment for experiencedprofessionals. Leads to a formally accredited qualification in MaternityNursing on successful completion. Covers the care of newborns andpostnatal mothers, and how to gain employment in the maternity sector.Does not cover basics such as bathing and bottlefeeding.

- Postnatal depression: one-day course covering the condition, signs andsymptoms, risk factors for PND, how to support sufferers and theirfamilies and accessing help.

- Care of multiples: one-day course covering caring for twins andmultiple births, premature and other special-care babies, includingfeeding and sleeping and establishing routines.

- Sleep training: one-day course covering normal and healthy sleephabits and sleep problems.

Montessori Centre International

- Infant toddler course: part-time and distance-learning course designedto develop a high level of professional competence in students wishingto extend their training as facilitators of the Montessori method forchildren.

National Childbirth Trust

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) provides information and practicalsupport on all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. Ithas 400 branches and its training arm is NHS ConNeCT, which runsworkshops around the country.

National Children's Bureau

- Working with babies - emotional, social and learning needs in daycare:one-day course that looks at the foundations of early learning,baby-adult interactions, the key person approach and the nurturing ofrelationships in the first 12 months of a baby's life.

- Working with one to threeyear-olds - emotional, social and learningneeds in daycare: one-day course looking at talking and listening withyoung children, nurturing relationships and experiences from the age ofone.

National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA)

- Planning a developmental play-based curriculum for children from birthto two: one-day course looking at children's developmental needs and howto meet these through a flexible play-based curriculum. The Birth toThree Matters' framework is an integral part of this course.

- Creating a learning environment for children from birth to two:one-day course on how to create a stimulating environment that motivateschildren to use selected resources to facilitate learning.

Newborn Nannies Training

- Babycare 0-12 months: one-day course covering development, feeding,weaning, immunisation, illness, routine and home safety.

- Care of newborns: one-day course covering all aspects of newborncare.

- Maternity care training: a course comprising four units: care of thenewborn baby, feeding the newborn baby, postnatal care for mothers andestablishing routine. A successful completion of assignments andassessment during the course leads to formal accreditation.

NIPPA: The Early Years Organisation

The Pre-School Learning Alliance has developed its own programme oftraining to ensure pre-schools and nurseries can meet all of therelevant regulatory requirements and achieve satisfactory or betteroutcomes in their Ofsted inspections. PORTAGE

National Portage Association

Portage is a home-visiting service for pre-school children who havespecial needs. It is based on the principle that parents are the keyfigures in the care and development of their child. Portage's four mainactivities are: weekly home visits by a trained home visitor; weeklywritten teaching activities designed for each individual child andparent; teaching and recording carried out by the parent; and weeklysupervision by the home visitor.

The British Stammering Association aims to help eliminate stammering inchildren by improving information for practitioners.

I Can

One in ten children have a communication disability - that's 1.2mchildren across the UK struggling to express themselves. I CAN helpschildren with speech and language difficulties nationwide. It provides acombination of specialist therapy and education for children,information for parents, and training and advice for teachers and otherprofessionals. It runs several courses, including:

- Semantic and pragmatic language disorder in the classroom: this courseexplores the typical features of pupils described as having a 'semanticand pragmatic language disorder', where social interaction is the mainarea of disability, and focuses on a practical problem-solving approachto managing these types of communication and associated behaviourdifficulties in the classroom.

- Developing communication through music: this course provides ideas andstrategies for facilitating interaction and communication through simplemusical activities and songs.

- Play and communication therapy: this course introduces a usefulapproach for working one-to-one with those children with communicationdisabilities who are unable to participate in assessment and therapy.This non-directive approach based on play therapy increases children'sability to participate in adult directive activities.

- Facilitating adult-child interaction: this course provides acomprehensive adult-child interaction training pack with fullfacilitation notes, participants' handouts and examples of models ofservice delivery to enable you to support parents, educationalists,therapists and students in promoting children's success incommunication.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction but most children affected canbe accommodated in early years settings with the correct procedures. TheAnaphylaxis Campaign provides information and training courses on how tosupport children with allergies in schools and early years settings.

Asthma

Asthma UK/ASTHMA UK Scotland/ASTHMA UK CYMRU

All three charities support people with asthma and those who care andwork with people with asthma.

BEDWETTING

Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence (ERIC)

ERIC provides help to children suffering from nocturnal enuresis, themedical term for bedwetting, and the less common problems of daytimewetting. ERIC provides advice on bedwetting, daytime wetting,constipation and incontinence in children with special needs.

BURNS/SCALDS

Children's Fire and Burn Trust

The trust gives advice on drawing up a co-ordinated and comprehensivefire and burn prevention programme for schools and other childcarers andaims to improve the long-term rehabilitation of child burn victims. Italso promotes child safety awareness during Child Safety Week.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the largest volunteer-supported cancer researchorganisation in the world.

CLEFT LIP

Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA)

CLAPA provides support for parents, and for people with the conditionand their families. There are more than 35 CLAPA groups - all run byvolunteers - and many other regional contacts across the UK. Theyprovide a specialist service for parents and professionals seeking helpin feeding babies with clefts, and support children affected byclefts.

Coeliac UK

Coeliac disease is a condition caused by an inability to digest gluten,which often results in bowel symptoms and failure to gain weight.Coeliac UK supports and provides help to people with coeliac disease andthose with dermatitis herpetiformis (an itchy skin rash caused by glutensensitivity). Diabetes UK is the largest organisation in the UK working for peoplewith diabetes.

PAEDIATRIC CARE

Action for Sick Children

Action for Sick Children seeks to ensure that sick children alwaysreceive the highest standard of care in hospital, at home and in thecommunity, and that their special needs are taken into account and thewhole child is treated - not just the illness or injury. It can providea parent pack to help parents cope with and prepare for differentaspects of children's healthcare, and videos to help take away the fearschildren have about hospital.

Yorkhill NHS Trust

Yorkhill NHS Trust in Glasgow offers advice on care of a sick child,what to tell children before they go into hospital, supporting childrenpost-operatively and in facing bereavement.

CHILD SAFETY

ABC medical services

Courses are recognised by Ofsted and meet the requirements of theChildcare Approval Scheme:

- Anaphylactic shock awareness course (EpiPen and AnaPen): a two-hourcourse including basic resuscitation and training in using an EpiPen andAnaPen. Only approved EpiPen instructors teach this course, which isrecognised by the Anaphylaxis Campaign.

- Baby and child first aid and resuscitation: three-hour course coveringinformation for coping with medical emergencies involving babies andchildren.

- Epilepsy awareness and rectal diazepam administration: informal courseaimed at parents and child carers responsible for looking after a childwith epilepsy.

- Level 3: course giving an opportunity to explore a different approachto using the outdoor environment to a higher level. You will investigatehow best to design and run a Forest school programme and look at how toapproach and apply it safely and effectively.

Bridgwater College Forest School

The school's training programme aims to train those wishing to set upand run Forest schools. It offers the following courses:

- Forest school visits: held monthly, these involve a briefpresentation.

- Adult taster days: an opportunity to spend a day in the woodland,finding out what Forest school is like and experiencing the same kind ofpersonal development that the children experience.

- Presentations and conferences: an outreach co-ordinator can come toyour setting to deliver a workshop.

- Training courses: part-time and intensive outreach courses areavailable anywhere in the UK. They range from a Level 1 Skills course,for someone who may be interested in developing their use of the outdoorsetting, to the Level 3 Forest School Leaders' Award. Courses includetechniques for building self-esteem, experiential learning and behaviourmanagement, delivering the Foundation Stage curriculum and practicalskills, including using tools and building fires.

Learning through landscapes

- Provides a range of training for teachers, governors, parents andschool grounds practitioners: topics covered include early yearsprovision for the outdoors and taking the formal curriculum outdoors.LTL's Early Years Outdoor Service helps settings plan and managehigh-quality creative outdoor play.

In addition to running training, LTL is developing networks ofaccredited trainers throughout the UK. The first network consists ofschool grounds professionals who can provide training events which helpschools identify how they can develop their outdoor space by involvingthe community.
