Nursery staff and children alike have a lot to learn from the experience of working in pairs. Kate Whelan describes the practice and observations developed in her setting

We have been working on a 'pair work' project at Southall Early Years Education Centre in London to capture and identify evidence of pair work experiences within our nursery setting.

The predominance of children's parallel play over pair work was highlighted when we followed the 'Effective Early Learning Project' from the University of Worcester. The finding inspired us to introduce an action plan to address the issue and help improve the quality of experiences we provide in the nursery.
