Two million children gain from tax credit

More than two million children are benefiting from the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC), according to Government figures released last week. Tables giving details of awards of the tax credit at August 2000, published by the Inland Revenue, show that a total of 2.2m children in England, Scotland and Wales were in families receiving awards. Just over half (51 per cent) of these families were headed by lone parents; these families included 956,000 children, an average of 1.6 children per family. The other 548,000 families were headed by couples, and included 1,255,000 children, an average of 2.3 children per family.
