UK centre workers front aid efforts

Early years workers from Sheffield Children's Centre are at the forefront of relief efforts in Pakistan, bringing aid to areas devastated by the South Asia earthquake. Nine workers from the centre were in the area when the earthquake struck on 8 October.

For more than 20 years the centre has helped to develop services for children and their families in Pakistan, in Azad Kashmir and the capital Islamabad, setting up early years provision, working with refugees and helping to build the infrastructure.

But Chrissy Meleady, chair of Sheffield Children's Centre, said, 'Thousands whom the centre worked with have lost their lives, homes and community resources.'

She said that 'within days' of the disaster more than 10,000 had been raised by parents and staff at the Early Excellence Centre. One of the centre's staff, Eram Malik, flew to Islamabad two weeks ago to co-ordinate the centre's response. Trucks were hired to distribute food, baby milk, water and children's clothes. A shipment of 45 tents was flown out on Friday.
