a clear plastic lunch box, a milk bottle containing coloured water, sunglasses with different tints, coloured cellophane, greaseproof paper sheets, books, a cup, a block of wood, food packaging.

Step by step

* Introduce the children to new vocabulary that describes the appearance of materials. Teach them words such as opaque, translucent and transparent.

* Lay out the objects in a clear space.

* Explain to the children that you cannot see through opaque things: translucent things let light through but you cannot see through them clearly and that you can see things clearly through transparent things.
