Volunteering programme

Childcare projects in England will be lent a hand by more than 1,000 young people from low-income backgrounds in a volunteering programme taking place from now until spring 2005. The Young Volunteer Challenge initiative, delivered through nine different voluntary organisations, aims to give participants experience of community service. Volunteers will be offered placements in areas such as health and social care, environmental work, and music, media and the arts, and will receive a weekly allowance of Pounds 45. The scheme aims to give young people a chance to develop their skills before entering work or further learning and to remove the financial barriers that keep young people from poor backgrounds from volunteering.
