A number of Scottish local authorities are carrying out reviews of the early years sector in a drive to save money.
Edinburgh City Council has just carried out its Early Years and Childcare Staffing Review with the aim of £113,000 in savings.
The council proposes piloting a number of options, which include reducing the time that children spend with a nursery teacher and giving senior nursery nurses more of a leadership role in their settings.
The pilots will begin in August, with a report due in May 2011.
Edinburgh education leader, Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, called the pilots 'important' and said they would 'give greater recognition to the nursery nurse role by putting in place a career structure where there wasn't one before'.
