Wasting away

Following your special report 'Feeling the squeeze' (29 July), this nursery has seen a new Neighbourhood Nursery open its doors for business just one mile away. At no time have we been approached either by the owners or the local Childcare Partnership for our view of the proposed provision, nor to discuss how best we can work together to meet the childcare needs of our local community. Indeed, when I asked for a copy of the parent prospectus I was told that the CD-Rom would be removed from the pack because we were 'the competition'.

Our fees are 95 a week for a full-time place, a figure which reflects the depressed local economy and the earning level of our parents.

The fees for this new Neighbourhood Nursery for the same service for deprived families? 115 per week - including a '10 discount'.
