What big puppets you have, pupils

Nursery pupils took centre stage on the last day of Book Week at Airlie Primary School in Angus, when they presented a puppet show of 'Little Red Riding Hood' to the entire school.

Nursery teacher Maria Capitelli said, 'This week's theme for the whole school has been the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We decided we would do a puppet show.'

The children heard different versions of the fairy tale so they could make up their own ending. Then they drew a picture depicting one scene, before making puppets and scenery.

'The children had a lot of involvement,' said Mrs Capitelli. 'They had to stick on matching eyes, a nose to smell with, a mouth to taste and then the puppet's hair.

'The nursery children also took part in the school's Book Swap, bringing in books that they had finished with, to exchange for something else. This is typical, since they are always involved in what is going on in the school.'

The Book Week ran from 21 to 25 January with something new each day. The older children in the school enjoyed visits from authors and a book illustrator, while nursery pupils were able to join in the day to 'Come dressed as your favourite character from a book'.

The nursery pupils performed their puppet show a second time when the children from nearby Newtyle nursery came to see it on 31 January.
