Opinion: Editor's view - Issues in childcare and early learning

So many issues in childcare and early learning come down to communication.

It is fascinating to see how much of Nursery World's coverage this week is linked by the theme of communication. Most obviously, we have more on the Bercow review of services for children and young people with speech and communication needs, including news on the Government's £40m Every Child a Talker programme (News, page 4), and John Bercow MP himself writing about his report and the outcomes he hopes for (Analysis, page 10).

We also report on the small-scale research project into the links between Foundation Stage Profile achievement and that at Key Stage 1 (News, page 4). While the significance of this is disputed, it is interesting that reaching the controversial early learning goals on phonics and writing appeared to have little correlation with Key Stage 1 levels, while well-developed spoken language seemed to be a major predictor.
