What If...? by Anthony Browne

Doubleday, paperback, £6.99

Joe is nervous about his first big party, and he has lost his friend’s house number. So he and his mum set off along the darkening street in search of the right house, with Joe listing all his worries about the party (such as ‘What if I don’t like the food?’ and ‘What if they play scary games?’) as they go.

Peering in the windows along the way, they chance upon some strange characters and unlikely goings-on. Surely the party won’t be the same? Wonderfully reassuring.
