Continuing professional development - Froebel focus

Teaching days and special certificates are on the agenda at Roehampton. Karen Faux reports.

The Early Childhood Studies team at Roehampton University is presenting a new series of Froebel study and teaching days, with an emphasis on reflective practice and a holistic approach to early years learning and development.

Three Froebel certificates are also offered by the University and these can count towards a Higher Education degree qualification.

Study days

- Understanding play, cultivating creativity. 13 February

Participants consider what is play and how it contributes to children's learning and well-being. How does it link with imagination and creativity and what makes a rich play environment? How can adults support and extend it? Speakers include Helen Tovey and Jane Read.

- Creating rich environments: listening to children using the Mosaic approach. 20 March

What is an enabling, challenging environment and how can it be developed? How should risk be balanced with challenge? How are children's perspectives listened to as part of the Mosaic approach? Speakers include Alison Clark, Helen Tovey and Jane Read.

- Developing and extending children's thinking. 15 May

An exploration of how children's thinking develops, considering research on neuroscience, how young children's thinking can be described and documented and how adults can support thinking Speakers include Sue Robson and Helen Tovey.

- Working together: roles and relationships in the early years. 12 June

This will explore building positive relationships and showing evidence; principles and practice of the key person approach; and partnerships with parents and working with communities.

CERTIFICATES

Teaching days for the certificates are on Saturdays 14 February, 16 May, 13 June, with three options:

- Froebel Professional Practice (30 credits - HE1/Level 4)

- Froebel Professional Development (30 credits - HE3/Level 6)

- Froebel Graduate Certificate (60 credits - HE3/Level 6)

Assessment is by a reflective portfolio, with a presentation and summary, a reflective diary and individual study. Candidates for the graduate certificate submit a 30-credit development project or APEL portfolio.
