In my view - EYPs shall go to the ball

Early years has been a Cinderella sector for far too long. However, among the most important of recent glimmers of light has been Early Years Professional Status.

Yes, it has been controversial. Yet the new status has won widespread support. As new professional avenues have opened up, a previously hidden demand for such opportunities seems to have burst forth. Thousands of long-standing practitioners are working their way through the foundation degree having EYPS as their long-term goal, while current numbers across all pathways have exceeded every expectation.

Above all, Early Years Professionals are ignoring the naysayers and getting on with the job, supporting colleagues, leading excellent practice, and delivering excellent education and care for young children. As they do so they are gaining widespread respect for themselves, and real credibility for EYP status.

Sadly, the EYPS programme remains fragile. Many EYPs are in vulnerable, temporary positions, with low and insecure funding. Career paths, access to ongoing professional development, and levels of pay are still problematic.

Aspect's EYP National Committee wrote to all the main parties during the election campaign. We asked for their commitment to maintaining and developing the EYPS programme and to providing statutory force to the 2010 and 2015 targets. We sought their promise to work with the professional bodies to develop effective pay structures and career paths throughout early years. We questioned their intentions over parity with other professionals, registration and access to ongoing CPD.

After the glitz and glamour of election fever, the real work needs to start. This is the time for all of us to campaign for our new Government to demand that EYPs be given proper recognition and support. We cannot allow this to be yet another 'initiative' in early years that just withers away and leaves us again a Cinderella figure in the corner, out of sight and out of mind.
