Nursery World Awards 2010: Organisations - Pre-school of the Year

Management Provision
WINNER: Highbury Lodge Day Nursery, Hitchin, Hertfordshire

Highbury Lodge has been operating for ten years and last year was declared 'outstanding' by Ofsted inspectors. The pre-school is based in a residential area close to the centre of Hitchin and aims to provide a happy home environment where children can learn and grow.

The passionate staff team demonstrate commitment to encouraging each child's individual developmental needs. Emphasis is put on learning through play and exploration, with practitioners supporting children to choose resources that they would like to investigate and play with.

Changes to the way in which staff plan and assess the children has led to the offer of non-contact time that enables them to update children's learning journeys in more depth. This allows practitioners to build a picture of children's interests and learning needs which is used to generate short-term and medium-term plans for each child.

Ofsted found that planning for the Early Years Foundation Stage at Highbury Lodge is 'fully child-led, using creative resources and innovative activities, ensuring that children receive experiences that foster excellent progress.

'Staff create an inspiring environment, using comprehensive safeguarding procedures and welfare routines, ensuring that they have an accurate knowledge of each child's needs and that each child is totally included.'

Another highlight is the 'exceptional links' with parents and carers, who are heavily involved in evaluating the provision offered by the pre-school. A 'buddy system' for new parents helps them to learn about the provision from established parents, which has helped provide consistent care.

The dedication that the pre-school team demonstrate in providing exceptional activities has an enriching impact on all aspects of the children's learning and development.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

The Kindergarten, Cheshire Day Nursery Group, Latchford, Warrington

The Kindergarten focuses on play and laughter. Exciting outdoor facilities provide children with endless opportunities to explore, create, discover and learn, while indoors the pre-school is spacious, bright and equipped to a high standard. The dedicated staff team has been carefully chosen so that their strengths and skills complement each other.

Sunshine Nursery, Burpham, Surrey

A cricket pavilion is home to this sessional pre-school. It's a small, carpeted setting with a family atmosphere, which is what attracts many parents, who are keeping the waiting list full until summer 2012. Research into the Scandinavian forest pre-school philosophy has led to as many activities as possible being offered to the children outdoors, whatever the weather.
