Nursery World Awards 2010: Resources - Birth to Threes - New Launch

Equipment & Resources
WINNER: Mirror Trays TTS Group

The Mirror Trays are an innovative resource that can be used to link in with important elements of the Early Years Foundation Stage, such as knowledge and understanding of the world, exploration and investigation and creative development.

They come in a set of four different shapes - square, rectangle, triangle and hexagon, which nest within each other for easy storage - and are made from beautifully finished wood with a tough acrylic mirror. The Mirrors Trays are ideal for sorting, collecting and exploring or displaying treasures in, whether that's mini beasts, natural materials or manufactured resources. They are safe and easy for children to carry around.

Children can make patterns with different objects, peer into the mirrors to see the reflections, light and different colours and also use them for small world play. This makes a great practical as well as aesthetic resource.

Debbie Hudd, playgroup leader at Kirkby Cross Playgroup, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, has found the Mirror Trays to be a fantastic, open-ended resource. She says, 'The trays are beautifully made and very sturdy. They are great for shape recognition and a good aid for reflection activities. The children enjoyed filling up the trays with sparkles, gems and other objects and also enjoyed looking at the reflections of themselves. We liked the way that the trays stacked neatly for storage.'
