Archfield House Nursery has been operating for 37 years and is proud to remain a family-run nursery.

The Outstanding-rated 103-place setting strives to provide exceptional care and to ensure that every child is supported to achieve their full potential in a safe, nurturing and enabling environment. It actively promotes a holistic approach to support each child’s individual needs and interests with an emphasis on a play-based curriculum based on Anna Ephgrave’s ‘Planning in the Moment’ approach.

Children are offered a wide range of ‘real life’ play experiences that promote exploration, problem-solving, creativity and social interaction. They benefit from innovative practices including attending Beach School, where they catch the train to explore the Severn Beach. Despite being mainly mud, practitioners have over the past decade embraced the endless learning opportunities offered there.

Staff value strong partnerships with parents, and a recent Ofsted inspector commented on the ‘overwhelming support from the parent community’. The nursery also has great links with local schools and care homes, the local bus routes and train station, as well as local parks and shops. Regular ‘Wandering Wanderers’ sessions encourage children to step into the locality and simply see what they can find.

Staff retention is important, and a large number of staff have been with Archfield for more than 15 years. There is a wellbeing scheme and a profit share bonus after two years of service. Staff social events range from pub visits to Sunday forest walks. A high percentage of staff have degrees and demonstrate career pathways for other staff.

Children’s outcomes are enhanced by working with the skilled dancers, photographers, musicians and linguists among the staff team. There is also an artist in residence and a woodwork area, while mindfulness and yoga sessions are offered too.

Nursery manager Cassie Holland has been approached by Bristol City Council to share good practice, and the nursery welcomes other practitioners and leaders to look around. Recently, Archfield has also been chosen to take part in the Government Stronger Practice Hub initiative.
