CPD AT THE SHOW

With an inspirational mix of seminars and two half-day masterclasses, the CPD-certified programme of high-quality training will provide attendees with an unrivalled opportunity to hear from acclaimed early years experts, each covering topics vital to best practice and supporting provision.

Masterclasses

On Friday, our panel of speakers will reflect on the new Ofsted judgement ‘quality of education’, which spans curriculum (intent), pedagogy (implementation) and outcomes (impact), in the masterclass ‘New Ofsted Judgement: Quality of Education’.

Dr Julian Grenier, head teacher at Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre in east London, will provide an essential guide to planning and delivering a holistic early years curriculum that provides opportunity for every child to thrive.

Dr Jo Basford, senior lecturer in childhood, youth and education at Manchester Metropolitan University, will then lead a discussion on cultural capital and how to make it meaningful in early years practice; and Dr Sue Dale Tunnicliffe, a reader in science education at University College London’s Institute of Education, will discuss the importance of science for young children.

Later in the morning, Becky Dolamore will lead a case study on the science exploration that has taken place at Rachel Keeling Nursery School, east London, where she is head teacher.

This masterclass will run from 9.30am-12.30pm on 7 February.

On Saturday, Professor Vivette Glover, Kevin Kelman, Bryony Monaghan and Ben Hasan will lead the masterclass ‘Ofsted Judgement: Behaviour and Attitudes’.

The speakers will consider how the early learning environment, both in the home and at nursery, influences a child’s behaviour and motivation to learn, a question that early years practitioners will need to revisit in light of Ofsted’s new judgement ‘behaviour and attitudes’ and the planned introduction of a ‘self-regulation’ early learning goal under the revised EYFS.

In her keynote speech on maternal anxiety, Vivette Glover, visiting professor of perinatal psychobiology at Imperial College London, will trace the impact of a mother’s emotional state on the emotional and cognitive development of the child, in the short and long term.

Kevin Kelman and Bryony Monaghan, chief education officer and service manager for additional support needs and well-being respectively at Stirling Council, will focus on the importance of self-regulation in early learning, how an awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can inform early years practice, and the importance of building relationships with families.

Finally, head teacher Ben Hasan, whose setting Wentworth Nursery School and Children’s Centre in east London piloted the Education Inspection Framework, will consider the attitudes needed to become a motivated learner, their links to the Characteristics of Effective Learning, and aspects of best practice in promoting these attitudes.

This masterclass will run from 9.30am-12.30pm on 8 February.

Seminars

A packed seminar programme will feature themes from across the EYFS, with speakers including Julia Manning-Morton, June O’Sullivan, Judith Twani, Alice Sharp, Penny Tassoni, Stella Louis, Jo Skone, Andy McCormack, Jan Dubiel, Julie Revels and Ben Kingston-Hughes.
