* Never approach a strange dog.
* Always ask permission from the owner before stroking a dog on a lead. Not all dogs are gentle and friendly.
* Never tease or disturb a dog that is eating or sleeping.
* Don't leave young children alone with a dog - the temptation to pull its tail may prove too much.
* Teach children never to put their faces close to an animal's face or claws, and not to stare into a dog's eyes.
* Point out to children that some animals are easily startled by high-pitched screams or sudden, loud noises.
* Enable children to recognize a dog's danger signals: a dog standing with feet apart, head forwards and tail vertical is a sign that it is feeling fearful and preparing to react. Staring, growling and backing away are also signs of aggression.
