Charlie and Lola inspire children to read with free books

Pearson and Booktrust have announced the new book titles that will be given to children starting school in September through the Booktime scheme.
Around 730,000 four- and five-year-old children in England and Wales will receive a free Booktime book pack, with two free books alongside copies for teachers and librarians. In total, 1.5 million books will be distributed.

The first is But Excuse Me That is My Book published by Puffin, an imprint of Penguin Children’s. It features the hugely popular Charlie and Lola characters created by Lauren Child as they go on a trip to the library to look at the different types of books that Lola might like to read. It is a humorous story about friends, family and the importance of trying new things, in an edition published especially for Booktime. But Excuse Me That is My Book is intended to inspire children to search for new books and stories.

The second book available for children in England is Tom’s Mad Mop from the Bug Club series by Pearson UK, part of the Pearson education business. It was written by Celia Warren and illustrated by Bill Ledger and is a story about playing with friends, which parents and teachers can use to help children with their reading.

Reception children in Wales will also receive But Excuse Me That is My Book and a Welsh language book to be announced later this spring.

Peter Hughes, head of corporate responsibility at Pearson, said, ‘Reading is fundamental to learning and in today’s modern world, to living. Pearson, Penguin and Booktrust hope that this gift will help unlock a wonderful world of stories.’
