Conservatives 'pose a real threat' to Sure Start, warns Labour

Over 1,000 Sure Start centres could close if the Conservatives win the general election, the Labour party has warned.

Labour’s shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt says that the Conservative party’s ‘extreme plans’ to cut spending over the next four years pose a ‘real threat’ to Sure Start children’s centres.

He warns that the closure of Sure Start centres will be ‘disastrous’ for working families, who are already struggling under 'David Cameron's Government'.

According to Labour, under a Conservative leadership hundreds of children’s centres have closed or ‘mothballed’, while childcare costs have risen six times faster than wages and the number of available childcare places have fallen by 40,000.

The political party says that if the Conservatives win the general election next month 'they’ll do the same again.'

Mr Hunt said, ‘The Tories pose a real threat to Sure Start – a service relied on by thousands of working families.

‘Before the last election, David Cameron said he would protect Sure Start but since then there are hundreds fewer centres. If they get in again they’ll do the same again.

‘Working families can’t afford five more years of this failing Tory plan.’

He went on to reiterate Labour's plans to revive Sure Start, provide more childcare places and extend free childcare for working parents of three and four year olds.
