The former children's television presenter, who is now a peer, has been named as the chair of the All-Party group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood.

The parliamentary group, previously known as the All-Party Group on Childhood Obesity, has been re-named to avoid any negativity associated with the word ‘obesity’ and to reflect the group’s broader focus.

Members of the group, which include Conservative MPs Andrea Leadsom and Claire Perry and Labour MP Sharon Hodgson, will promote evidence-based discussions and produce reports on all aspects of childhood obesity to inform policy decisions and public debate.

Baroness Benjamin said, ‘Our main ambition for this group is to develop practical policies to halt and reverse the rising tide of childhood obesity. We will call upon a wide variety of interests and experts in the field to act together in the spirit of co-operation.

‘We need to find solutions to the massive and rising costs of dealing with the effects of obesity and the personal price paid by those affected.’
